Finding a Campus and Online Based New Jersey MSW Program

For online students at Rutgers, there is an ability to customize the program for part-time or full-time experience, and courses can be pursued either fully online or in a hybrid format. Specialized practice can be obtained in clinical social work or management. This program is available to all prospective students in the United States.

Rutgers University's Online Master of Social Work

The Rutgers School of Social Work offers a variety of ways to take the MSW program, either completely online, in a blended format, or intensive weekend studies for those continuing their work. Campus options are available in New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden. Students that have completed an undergraduate degree in social work accredited by the CSWE could be eligible for advanced standing, which eliminates foundational work in the program.

Online Benefits

Online education is distributed through the Canvas learning management system. While many courses will offer an asynchronous format, which gives students the ability to complete their education on their own time, they will need to complete assignments and projects by specific due dates. Typical technical requirements include having a modern computer with access to webcam and microphone devices.

Field Requirements

Field internships begin the third semester for students in any of the three-year programs. In order to fulfill curriculum requirements, approximately 8 to 10 clock hours are needed each week, which brings the overall program total to 1,125 total hours. Those eligible for advanced placement will have a few more required hours per week, but just 885 total clock hours.

Residency Requirement

The intensive weekend program is geared for students that have a professional background in social work. This is a hybrid format split across three terms that has students meet on-campus once per month, and coursework is completed online around those meetings. Unlike many MSW formats, there is placement at just one location, and admittance only takes place in September each year.

Certification programs are not available in the intensive weekend format, but some of the courses within their curriculum are available to take. Students must be prepared when entering an intensive weekend course and are recommended to connect with their cohort to enhance their educational experience.
