Finding a Campus Based Arizona MSW Program

Tempe (outside of Phoenix) is home to multiple MSW programs, including Arizona State University's social work programs, Grand Canyon University's BSW and MSW, and the Bachelor of Social Work available at the University of Phoenix. The latter institution is online-based and also has opportunities for those looking a virtual experience at the undergraduate level.

There are a number of specializations to consider when taking the graduate Arizona State University program, including working with youth clients, community and social systems, and health and mental health.

Arizona State University's Online Master of Social Work

The School of Social Work has a generalist program for online students that helps them prepare for working with individuals or groups in a variety of professional situations. In addition to the coursework, this program includes 960 hours of field education at two different internships. These locations must be approved by the school in the region the student will take the program at.

Curriculum Requirements

Examples of courses that students will take include Micro and Macro Human Behavior and Social Environment, Assessment of Mental Disorders, Social Policy and Services, and Advanced Social Work Practice. A total of 60 credit hours in the span of 20 courses are needed to fulfill degree requirements, and each course is approximately 7.5 weeks long. The program ends with the Applied Portfolio Project, which helps demonstrate what the student has learned throughout the program.

Admission Requirements

Prospective students looking to enter the program must have at least a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative 3.0 GPA in the last 60 credit hours of their program. This must be designated when submitting the official transcripts, along with a personal statement, resume, and letters of reference. There must also be proof of 240 hours of volunteer or work experience in the last five years.

Endorsements and Renewal Requirements

After submitting proof of postgraduate experience and education, applicants for the licensure must pass the Association of Social Work Boards exam. Arizona endorses other licenses that have been earned in other states that have identical or stronger requirements. At least 30 continuing education credit hours are needed to renew every two years, and there are fees for both the initial application and recurring renewals.
