Finding an Online Based New Hampshire MSW Program

For UNH students, there is an ability to complete the program in a flexible manner based on work and time commitment needs. There are no on-campus requirements needed to complete the program, and most courses are offered in the asynchronous format. Students are able to specialize as an advanced generalist in the field of social work.

University of New Hampshire's Online Master of Social Work

The online MSW through the University of New Hampshire requires 62 credit hours to complete, which is generally accomplished in 28 months. Students can specialize in mental health, clients dealing with disability, and substance abuse. Graduates from the program have gone on to become child welfare case workers, community outreach organizers, and public policy analysts.

Program Formats

Students can choose a variety of ways to complete the program, such as pursuing the traditional format exclusively at the Durham campus, the hybrid model at the Manchester campus, or the online program with no campus visits. The hybrid format has courses held at Manchester on Saturdays with the rest of the coursework available online. Advanced standing is possible at Durham or online for students that completed a Bachelor's degree in social work.

Field Requirements

Field practice requires 1,240 clock hours of experience over a span of two internships. Students must complete courses with at least a B letter grade or they will receive a "failing grade" on their record. Nine credits worth of a "failing grade" will have students dismissed from the program.

Admission Requirements

Requirements in the admission process include transcripts, resume, personal statement, and the application with fee. The personal statement is a four-to-five page essay that details what background the student has in social work and why they are considering their studies at UNH. Students are administered into the program in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Social Work Careers, Licensures, and Salaries in New Hampshire

Salaries are very high for New Hampshire in the sectors of health care and substance abuse treatment, which is generally the case for many northeastern-based states. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, health care social workers make an annual mean wage of $64,680 across the state, and that can raise up to around $83,610 in the top 10 percentile.

New Hampshire Social Work Licensure Requirements

One unique aspect of New Hampshire is the lack of licensure for non-clinical social work. The only license that can be gained is the Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. This requires the completion of a Master’s degree and 3,000 hours of postgraduate experience from a supervisor that has already obtained the advanced licensure.

The clinical exam through the Association of Social Work Boards must be completed, along with a criminal background check, and a license will be obtained when both are passed. Renewals take place every two years with the requirement of 30 continuing education credit hours. Individuals with licensures in other states will have to go through the process as a new applicant in New Hampshire.
