Finding a Campus Based Louisiana MSW Program

New Orleans is the most popular area in terms of social work job opportunities and education with multiple credited institutions. Tulane University, who does offer their Master's degree online, offers specialized education in criminal justice, mental health, and working with youth and family members.

In addition to Tulane University, the popular public institution of Louisiana State University offers an online Master's program.

Louisiana State University's Online MSW

The School of Social Work provides an online version of their Master of Social Work degree that can completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Courses are offered in seven-week modules, which helps provide specific focus on particular topics and there are week-long breaks between the courses. Full-time students can expect to complete the degree in two years and at least 3 and 1/2 years for part-time enrollment.

Students with an undergraduate degree in social work may be accepted into the advanced standing program, which eliminates foundational courses. These courses must be completed before any enrollment into the advanced or specialist courses. Field work will require around 16 to 18 hours per week spread out in four modules for the single format, and 40 hours per week for 12 weeks over a span of two modules in the block format.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements include submitting a letter of intent and three letters of recommendation. Two of those letters must be from an academic instructor and the other from a professional in the industry. Receiving recommendation from an internship supervisor is ideal for the latter requirement, as is pursuing an internship during undergraduate education.

Transcripts must show that a Bachelor's degree was completed at an accredited university with at least a 3.0 GPA in the final 60 credit hours. While this is not limited to disciplines in social work, completed coursework should include 12 credit hours in social sciences and 9 credit hours in humanities. At least a C grade must have been achieved in an introductory statistics course.

Tulane University's Online MSW

Students can pursue the online version of the Master of Social Work on a full-time or part-time basis. The full-time version separates the 60 credit-hour curriculum over four semesters, and the final three semesters will have nearly 950 total hours of field work. For part-time enrollment, students will complete the full program in 2 and 1/2 years.

Advanced Standing Format

Students qualify for advanced standing if they have completed an accredited Bachelor's degree in social work. This removes 12 credit hours worth of foundational courses, splitting up the courses into three or six semesters based on enrollment. This equates to roughly one or two full years to complete the program, and the same amount of field work is required.

Program Tracks and Electives

Examples of courses that students can take include Social Welfare History and Policy, Theories and Practice in Community Organizing and Policy Advocacy, and Data Analysis and Interpretation for Program Evaluation. Field work provides general experience in working with patients and evaluating conditions when developing treatment plans. With experience in statistics and data analysis, professionals can perform more evidence-based treatment procedures.

There are certifications that students can specialize in, such as Disaster and Collective Trauma, and Mental Health, Addictions, and the Family. These can be completed on their own instead of pursuing the full degree, but licensure in states do require a full educational experience. These certifications are useful in concentrating on a specific part of social work.

Social Work Careers, Licensure, and Salaries in Louisiana

Many social workers in mental health and substance abuse treatment can be found in the state of Louisiana. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 1,270 are employed in these fields. Average salaries are estimated at $41,350 across the state, but this can jump to $59,620 in the top 10 percent.

Louisiana Social Work Licensure Requirements

A recognized Registered Social Worker in Louisiana only needs a Bachelor’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited university. For those completing a Master’s degree, they are eligible for the Licensed Master Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) designations. For the latter, this requires additional clinical supervision.

Hours of Experience Requirements

In total, 5,760 supervision hours are needed, and 3,840 of these hours must be supervised by a supervisor that has LCSW status and approved by the licensing board. All clock hours, educational experience, and background check must be verified before gaining licensure. There is an additional examination by the Association of Social Work Boards that must be passed.

Endorsement and Renewal Requirements

Professionals that have the LCSW for at least three years can apply to become board-approved supervisor. The state allows endorsements for licensed professionals in other states as long as other locations have just as strong requirements or further. Licensees must renew every year by August 31st, and this requires the completion of 20 continuing education hours – half of that being clinically-focused for those with the LCSW.
